What Is The World's Most Hated Home Modification For Accessibility?

Most Hated Home Modification

This was my second time exhibiting at VGM - Live At Home, a 100 person conference for companies that do home modifications. We were talking about home modifications that allow people to live at home. Things like zero-entry showers, grab bars, stair lifts, elevators, toilet lifts, and all sorts of essential items.

I was trusted to lead a roundtable. I had never lead a round table, so I Googled how to do it. Google suggested I come up with thought provoking questions. My favorite of the day was "What is a product that you hate, but you are still forced to work with".

The Most HATED home modification of almost everyone at the event was Walk-In Bathtubs. (walk in tubs are those bathtubs with the door on the side). Walk in bath tubs were hated not just by installers, but by Occupational Therapists, sales people, business people, and mostly by the customers themselves. Customer satisfaction of people who paid for a walk in bathtub is the lowest of all of the work these companies do. Many companies refuse to sell you a walk in tub.

Why do they hate walk in bathtubs?
I was munching popcorn and taking notes as people were dishing the dirt on walk in bathtubs. I don't think I've ever seen a crowd dish on a product like that before and I was very entertained. Here are the three main reasons why they hate them.

1. The person sits naked and cold while you fill it. The tub can take 3-4 minutes to fill in which time Grandma is freezing her booty off.

2. You are bathing them in their own filth. Often, people who need a walk in tub don't have the best hygiene and the water quickly becomes very dirty.

3. Grandma freezes again when you drain the tub. The problem is so bad that deluxe tubs often have a pump to drain them more quickly, some in less than a minute. The next time you are done with bathing, try waiting a minute before you cover your body up.

So, there you go. Walk in tubs are not so great. I definitely learned something this week!

That's all for this newsletter. Thanks for reading. I'm right here if you have anyone that needs help getting off the toilet.
