Is Your Bathroom Fall-Safe?

A closer look at Fall Prevention Month, and the everyday moment that gets overlooked.

September is Fall Prevention Month, which makes it a good excuse to do something most of us never do: take a hard look at the bathroom.

It's an easy room to overlook. But there's a moment that happens several times a day, for every single person in the house, that rarely gets mentioned: getting on and off the toilet.

A bigger risk than most people realize

The data on this is more specific than you'd expect. Research on bathroom falls has found that a meaningful share are tied directly to standing up from the toilet, and that share climbs sharply with age, rising from roughly 1 in 7 falls in the general population to well over a third among adults 85 and older. Bathroom falls are also more likely than falls elsewhere in the home to result in a serious injury.

Part of the reason is physical. Standing up quickly can trigger a drop in blood pressure, a common side effect of medications many older adults already take, which is exactly the kind of thing that causes the lightheadedness right before a fall. It's not carelessness. It's a genuinely hard transition, several times a day, that gets harder with age and rarely gets talked about.

The small signs are easy to miss

Most people don't wake up one day unable to stand from the toilet. It happens gradually, in small workarounds that are easy to miss because they become routine:

  • Pushing off the sink or counter for leverage
  • Rocking forward once or twice to build momentum
  • Asking for help, every time
  • Quietly avoiding the bathroom when no one else is home

None of these are dramatic on their own. That's what makes them easy to overlook, right up until they aren't.

A five-minute walkthrough

You don't need a renovation to make a bathroom safer. Most of what matters comes down to a handful of practical questions: whether you can sit and stand without a struggle, whether the room is well lit at night, whether the floor is dry and clear, and whether the things you use every day are actually within reach.

We put together a bathroom safety checklist, covering the toilet, lighting, floors, and everyday reach, that takes about five minutes to go through. It's free to download, and it's worth doing before a fall makes the decision for you.

Maintain your independence and dignity

For a lot of people, the toilet transition is the one item on that checklist that a grab bar or a nightlight can't fully solve. When standing up has become genuinely difficult, not just inconvenient, but a real daily struggle — that's where a powered toilet lift comes in.

The DL2 Deluxe gently lowers you onto the toilet and lifts you back to standing at the press of a button, while keeping you fully supported the whole way. No pushing off the counter. No rocking forward to build momentum. No waiting for someone else to help.

Falls aren't an inevitable part of getting older, and neither is losing independence in the bathroom. Small changes, a checklist, a grab bar, a lift that does the hardest part for you, add up to a bathroom that's easier and safer to use, every day.
