Constipation is the number-two problem.

I didn't know what to write about today. I was stuck - constipated!

Then it hit me. Why am I stuck in the first place?

Turns out constipation is the number-two problem because something always comes before it.

So here are a few simple ways to get things moving again.

Don't cut back on water.

Some people who struggle with toileting independence intentionally drink less to avoid bathroom trips. Unfortunately, dehydration is one of the biggest contributors to constipation. Staying hydrated helps keep things moving.

Older adults who depend on assistance often need encouragement and help to drink enough fluids. Hydration isn't simply about having water available—it's also about making it easy and practical to drink throughout the day.

Here is a link to a study from the NIH National Library of Medicine.

And the Cleveland Clinic has an insightful article about preventing dehydration in older adults.

Higher isn't always better.

Raised toilet seats and comfort-height toilets can make sitting down and standing up easier, but they may also reduce the natural squat position that helps the body fully empty the bowel. A small footstool under the feet can help recreate a more natural posture.

The Mayo Clinic is running a clinical trial to follow up on a study that claims that pooping position improved bowel symptoms in nearly 98% of 153 constipated participants

A toilet lift can allow people to use a lower height toilet because the lift solves the struggle of standing up from a low toilet.

Movement matters.

Even short walks or gentle exercise can stimulate the digestive system. The less we move, the slower things tend to move.

Fiber needs water.

Fiber can help, but without enough fluids, it can sometimes make constipation worse. Think of fiber and water as a team.

Don't Ignore the Urge
When nature calls, answering promptly is often better than waiting. Delaying bowel movements can make stools harder and more difficult to pass.

The  National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) cites delayed emptying and ignoring the urge as causes for constipation.

Dignity Lifts help solve the issue of avoiding the bathroom altogether.

When getting on and off the toilet becomes difficult, people often begin changing their behavior without realizing it.

They may drink less to avoid bathroom trips, postpone going until someone can help, or try to 'hold it.'

Over time, those understandable coping strategies can increase the risk of constipation."
